Books

Sample spread from "The Scents of Memories," a book in which participants were approached randomly and asked to blindly smell five scents: lemon, sage, cinnamon, pine, and coffee. They then shared a personal memory associated with each scent, and excerpts from these collected stories appear on each spread paired with vivid imagery relating to the memories.

This handmade book uses a combination of archival inkjet, screenprint, and letterpress printing.

Actual size: 8.75" x 9" (closed).

Puzzles are formed from the secrets of strangers collected in anonymous sealed envelopes. The code sets are made from images that relate to each particular secret. Images may repeat from secret to secret, but they do not necessarily represent the same letters.

The viewer must solve each code to learn the secrets.

This handmade book was printed using archival inkjet. Actual size: 5" x 7" (closed).

Text cut from the 7:00 p.m. TV listings in one newspaper accompany half-tone photographs of toy army soldiers and their array of firepower. Programs like “Family Feud” and “Survivor” demonstrate a cultural desire to watch others endure hostile and trying circumstances for pleasure and sport, raising eyebrows about an underlying enthusiasm for conflict.

This handmade book was printed offset with archival inkjet covers. Actual size: 5" x 5"(closed)

This wordless story recounts an adventure in San Francisco’s Chinatown, investigating the necessity of language and the act of communicating in its absence.

Ten women were approached randomly and asked to share a cup of tea. Documentation of these meetings graces the pages of this dainty book, with photographs of the women’s hands as they drink paired with descriptive text that evokes both the teas they chose and their personalities.

This handmade book combines offset and archival inkjet printing and is enclosed in a screenprinted and letterpressed wrapper.

Actual size: 3.75" x 34.75" (extended); 4" x 4.25" (in wrapper).

This piece was created as part of Unsaid Thoughts, a project based on the idea of communicating with others. Participants posted the things they wished to say on a blog, and pieces were created by hand that were inspired by certain posts. Once an object was completed, it was sent to the submitter in the hopes that he or she would use it to communicate their true thoughts or simply be inspired to do so.

This piece was created with letterpressed polymer clay. The text reads, "For you, since you don’t have one of your own."
